RedTails Bowling Grit Through Adversity at Big Ole Open in Minnesota
The Hawkeye Community College RedTails Bowling teams traveled north this past weekend to compete in the Big Ole Open, held in Alexandria, Minnesota. The event also served as a Mid Iowa Bowling Conference tournament, adding to its competitive significance. Despite challenging lane conditions and travel demands, both the men's and women's teams showed resilience, adaptability, and potential for growth heading into the next phase of the season.
The RedTails men entered the weekend with a specific strategy, but quickly had to adapt after realizing the difficult lane conditions would require a different approach. The lanes proved unforgiving for most of the field-except for one.
Freshman Isaiah Sample delivered a standout performance, utilizing a unique part of the lane that few others could capitalize on. His ability to read and respond to the challenging oil pattern set him apart from the field, as he outscored the competition by more than 60 pins. This impressive showing not only earned him a division title but also marked his first All-Tournament Team appearance of the season.
Following Saturday's individual games, the coaching staff and bowlers worked to adjust their strategy for Sunday's baker format. With a revised plan in place, the men executed with greater control and lane clarity. Despite improved performance on Day 2, the team finished 7th overall, knowing more was within reach.
"We'll spend this week evaluating our performance and refining our execution so we're better prepared for the next challenge in Eau Claire," said Head Coach.
The RedTails women's team encountered many of the same obstacles over the weekend-namely the difficult oil pattern and the toll of long-distance travel. Yet, the experience served as a valuable learning opportunity for the group.
Assistant Coach Kurt Kirchner reflected, "The message or word for the weekend in my opinion was challenging. The longer oil patterns proved to be difficult for the girls to figure out. Along with the travel, I think everything played into the challenging environment. It was a good weekend, a lot of fun, but definitely challenging."
Assistant Coach Emily Barth echoed the sentiment, while highlighting the team's progress: "This weekend proved to be challenging due to the pattern and a few early mornings. However, I continued to see them grow as a team and gain knowledge throughout the tournament. While this wasn't the outcome we wanted, we will take this as a learning opportunity to continue to improve."
Despite the results, the weekend showcased the team's resilience and commitment to development-qualities that will serve them well as the season continues.
The RedTails won't have much time to rest, as they return to competition this coming weekend at the Stout Open, hosted by the University of Wisconsin - Stout in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. With valuable experience gained in Alexandria, the RedTails will be looking to sharpen their performance and build momentum as the season progresses.
