RedTails Battle Deep Field at Leatherneck Classic
The RedTail Bowling teams returned to the Rockford, Illinois, area this past weekend for the Leatherneck Classic, the largest and most competitive tournament of the fall semester. With a massive field and numerous nationally ranked programs in attendance, the event once again lived up to its reputation as one of the toughest tests of the season.
Despite the challenging conditions, the Hawkeye men held their own, finishing 23rd out of 39 teams and landing just shy of the middle of the pack. Throughout the weekend, the group showed flashes of high-level scoring and strong potential, giving the coaching staff plenty to build on heading into their next event.
Leading the way for the RedTail men was Isaiah Sample, who continued his steady fall campaign by averaging 197.2 over five games, placing 71st out of 456 scored competitors.
On the women's side, the RedTails earned a 24th-place finish, highlighted by a consistent performance from Delaney Legg, who averaged 149.8 and finished 115th out of 249 bowlers.
The coaching staff came away encouraged by the progress they saw across both squads, especially on the women's side. Coach Kurt noted that the group showed meaningful improvement in their approach throughout the weekend.
"The girls did a good job of focusing on one shot at a time and staying in the moment," he said. "We missed more spares than we would've liked, but there was definitely progress on the lanes."
Coach Emily echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the resilience and teamwork the women displayed under challenging lane conditions.
"This weekend the girls showed they are capable of putting up strong scores," she said. "They worked through struggles, maintained good energy, and really came together as a team."
With valuable experience gained and clear growth areas identified, the RedTails look ahead with optimism as they continue preparing for the remainder of the season.
