RedTails Golf Stays Hot at NJCAA Region XI Meet
RIVERSIDE-The RedTail Men's Golf team continued their stretch of outstanding play as they finished fourth at the NJCAA Region XI meet on May 1-2.
The two-day event began with some extremely tough weather conditions, as high winds made it difficult for the players to find their rhythm. Despite the weather, the RedTails stayed focused mentally to keep themselves in contention going into Sunday's round.
The team finished the third round with a weekend-low score of 316, and finished fourth of the nine teams competing. Sophomores Austin Reynolds and Ethan Streicher made the Honorable Mention All-Region team with their terrific play over the weekend. Reynolds' team-best score of a 241 was good enough to qualify him for the national tournament. With the qualification, Reynolds became the first ever RedTail to qualify for the national tournament.
"The guys hung in there this weekend under some brutal conditions on Saturday. It's very exciting to have Austin Reynolds get through and be our first golfer in program history to make the national tournament. Austin played the last 11 holes one over par to get that spot, and Bill and I are extremely proud of him for his mental toughness," said head coach Micah Destival. "It was a good year with a lot of ups and downs, and we put ourselves in position to make the national tournament as a team if we play just a little better in the afternoon on Saturday. Overall, we are happy with the progress the guys made this year and proud to have them all be student-athletes at Hawkeye."
Reynolds will prepare to represent the RedTails at the NJCAA DII Championship in Plymouth, Indiana, on May 18-21.
