RedTails Take One at Spring Games
The RedTail Softball Team attended the Spring Games hosted in Winter Haven, Florida, taking on Waubonsee Community College and Mott Community College. The RedTails split on the day, winning game one 5-3 and losing game two 6-2.
Game One: 5 (HCC), 3 (WCC)
The RedTails started on top in game one, scoring in the first inning. Mackenzie Bridgewater walked, stole two bases, and scored when Delaney Eickert doubled to left field.
Waubonsee came back to take the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs on two doubles and a walk, giving them a 2-1 lead.
Hawkeye wasn't done scoring yet, when in the top of the fourth they tied up the game. Olivia Techam started with a single and scored when Hailey Harbour hit a double.
In the fifth, the RedTails had an Alyvia Anderson single, Eickert walk, and Techam single to score two more runs. Jordan Trueblood stepped up and hit a two out single to score one more runner, giving Hawkeye the 5-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Chiefs threatened on the bases, but the defense stopped the threat. A single, error, and single scored one run, but a double play by Lillian McCarty, Techam, and Isabelle Kriegel ended the game in a 5-3 win for the RedTails.
At the plate, Techam led the way, going 2-3 with two runs scored, two runs batted in, and one walk. Six other RedTails added hits to the game. On the mound, Mya Chamberlin went the distance, pitching seven innings, giving up five hits, three runs, two earned, one walk, and five strikeouts.
Game Two: 6 (MCC), 2 (HCC)
The RedTails again started out on top in game two when Bridgewater walked and scored on a Kiregel homerun.
Mott scored four runs in the bottom of the second, going up 4-2. Three singles, a double, and two walks helped them cross home plate.
The game remained at 4-2 until the sixth inning, when Mott scored their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth. A single, walk, sacrifice bunt, and an error allowed them to take a 6-2 lead.
The RedTails threatened in the top of the seventh, when Kriegel reached base on an error and Ellie Lorenz hit a single, but the Bears stopped the threat, giving them the 6-2 win.
At the plate, Kriegel led the way going 1-3 with one home run, one run scored, and two runs batted in. On the mound, Addyson McKillip took the loss, going 1.2 innings, giving up five hits, four runs, and two walks. McCarty threw the last 4.1 innings, giving up just two hits, one earned run, four walks, and six strikeouts.
The RedTails finish their Florida trip tomorrow, Saturday, March 14th at DiamondPlex Park in Winter Haven, FL. Game time is set for 10:00 & 12:30 AM EST.
