RedTails Take One From Hawks
The RedTail Softball Team closed out their trip to Nebraska playing against Northeast Community College on Sunday, April 12th. The RedTails split on the day, losing game one 6-1 and winning game two 10-8.
Game One: 6 (NCC), 1 (HCC)
The RedTails struggled at the plate in game one, not being able to put together many hits to get runners to score. They only had one run cross home plate in the third inning. Emilee Bergmann walked and moved to second on a Jordan Eads single. Mackenzie Bridgewater then singled to score Bergmann.
The Hawks had hot hitting from the start, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first on a single, RedTail error, double, and another single.
Northeast added two more runs in the second, scoring on a hit by pitch and three singles. They added one more run in sixth to give them a 6-1 lead.
At the plate, the RedTails had five hits. Bergmann led the team going 1-2 with one run scored and one walk. On the mound, Mya Chamberlin took the loss, going six innings, giving up eleven hits, six runs, three earned, two walks, and three strikeouts.
Game Two: 10 (HCC), 8 (NCC)
The RedTail's bats woke up in game two. To start the game, Bridgewater led with a walk and scored on a Delaney Eickert homerun.
The Hawks scored one in the first to respond, scoring on a double and single.
Hawkeye added another run in the second. Jordan Eads walked and advanced to second when Bridgewater singled. Isabel Kriegel hit a single to score Eads to give the RedTails a 3-1 lead.
The Hawks tied up the game in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back RedTail errors forced runners on first and second. A single scored one run and another error scored the second run.
The RedTails took back the lead the next inning. Bridgewater bunted to reach first safely and moved to second on a Kriegel single. Ellie Lorenz had a single to load the bases, and Alyvia Anderson put the ball in play to score one. Hailey Harbour forced a Hawk error to let another run cross home plate, making it a 5-3 game.
The RedTails lost the lead in the sixth inning when Northeast had four hits, giving the Hawks a chance at the game with a one run lead.
In the top of the seventh, the RedTails dug their cleats in and found some life at the plate. Eickert started with a single and Anderson hit a single to have runners at first and second. A Harbour single scored one run to tie the game. Bergmann stepped up and hit a single to load the bases, and an inside-the-park grand slam from Rylie Devlin gave the RedTails a four-run lead.
The RedTails stopped the bleeding in the seventh immediately after giving up two runs to the Hawks, giving Hawkeye the 10-8 win.
At the plate, Eickert led the way going 2-4 with one run scored and two runs batted in. Bridgewater, Kriegel, and Anderson each had two hits in the game. Adelyn Sienknecht got the win, going 3.2 innings, giving up seven hits, five runs, four earned, and one strikeout. Lillian McCarty also threw 3.1 innings, giving up three runs, one earned, and two strikeouts.
The RedTails are back in action on Wednesday, April 15th at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. Game time is set for 2:00 & 4:00 PM.
