Female Athlete of the Week-Sunshine Gray
RedTail soccer student-athlete Sunshine Gray has been named Scheels Female Athlete of the Week for her performance against Scott Community College on Tuesday, October 18.
Sunny had a spectacular game in the 4-0 win over Scott Community College to finish out the regular season at home. She finished the game with a hat-trick, scoring three of the four goals to shutout Scott CC. Sunny has been an essential part of the team this season, helping lead the women's soccer team ranked second in the Region XI Championships coming up this weekend.
"Sunny has been such an important player for us this season, not just her ability on the field, her values and personality have been a huge factor in the growth of this team," said interim head coach Chris Rennie. "Sunny has been a rock for us defensively this season, this past week really showed how much she offers this group. The team won all three conference games, only conceding one goal in the process. In our last game; however, we got to see another side of Sunny's game, a hat-trick of goals in our 4-0 win. "For this to happen on Sophomore night was a fitting achievement for a person that everyone on this team values so highly and we will really miss her next year."
"This last game was so important to our team not only because it was our last conference game of the season, but also because it was sophomore night," said Sunny. "I knew after finishing the first half 0-0 that I wanted to lift our team's spirits and really make the most of the rest of the game for the sophomores especially. After getting my first goal in the second half, the mood and mentality of the team totally changed and we started playing for each other. This game was definitely a memorable one for me, getting to celebrate another win with all my sophomores by my side, and my hat-trick was just the cherry on top."
Gray is originally from La Porte City.
