RedTail Women’s Soccer Supports Special Olympics with Meaningful Community Engagement
Hawkeye Community College's women's soccer team spent March 8 at the UNI Dome volunteering at the Special Olympics, giving back to the Cedar Valley community with enthusiasm and heart. The RedTails brought energy, encouragement, and genuine connection to athletes throughout the day as they helped run activities, cheered on participants, and stepped in wherever support was needed, creating a warm and uplifting environment for everyone involved.
Impact on the Community
The team's presence added excitement and support for Special Olympics athletes, many of whom lit up when interacting with the players. RedTail student‑athletes helped facilitate events, guided participants, and celebrated every achievement, big or small. Their involvement strengthened Hawkeye's commitment to service and highlighted the program's dedication to building relationships beyond the field.
Coach Chris Rennie talked about the day and the impact it made on their team, "Every semester, we try to find new opportunities to have our women's soccer program attend events in the community. This was our first time attending the Special Olympics, and it was an experience that was really rewarding for our student athletes. I was really proud of each of our players; they really put themselves out there to interact with the event participants and jump in wherever needed. It is great to see our Hawkeye student athletes out in the community representing themselves and the college in such a positive manner."
