Women’s Track and Field Breaks Records in at Mustang Invite
The RedTail Women's Track and Field team broke three school records and added one national qualifier while competing at the Mustang Open in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, April 17. The women placed seventh out of 13 teams and set an exceptional number of personal best times and marks.
Ryann Portch punched her ticket to nationals in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 18.51 seconds. Portch's time broke the school record and landed her a second place finish overall in the event. Kaylee Leicht took third place in the event with her personal best time of 2 minutes, 22.98 seconds.
Jenna Hummell ran an impressive time of 12.91 seconds in the 100-meter dash, placing her at number two all-time in program history. Hummel went on to add a sixth place finish in the 200-meter dash, running another personal best time of 27.23 seconds.
The RedTails 400-meter relay team of Maddy Lenaerts, Leicht, Portch, and Hummell broke the school record with their time of 4 minutes, 12.76 seconds. The relay team sits at 12th overall in the NJCAA.
Mari Shavers took fifth place in the discus throw followed by an eighth place finish by Alyssa Striegel. Shavers also added a seventh place finish in the shot put and Allison Flanscha finished in 11th. Carlie Hoppe recorded a school record breaking throw of 26.73m in the javelin throw, placing eighth overall.
"The women's team is really starting to see improvement at the perfect time as we head into Drake Relays, regionals and the national meet," says head coach Tyler Mulder.
Next up, the RedTails travel to Des Moines to compete in the Drake Relays from April 22-24.
