RedTails Fall in Four Sets at Iowa Lakes
The Hawkeye RedTails Volleyball team came out strong but ultimately fell to Iowa Lakes, 3–1, on Tuesday, September 30th in Estherville.
Hawkeye opened the match with energy, taking the first set 25–15 behind efficient offense and strong execution. Emersyn Secora led the early charge, while Jenna Scharper and Shannon Moorman contributed key kills to set the tone.
In the second set, the RedTails kept it close throughout. Alexis Even came up big with several well-placed attacks, and Emily Erwin, stepping in as starting setter, helped keep the offense flowing. However, Iowa Lakes edged out a 25–23 win to even the match.
Momentum shifted in the third as Iowa Lakes found their rhythm, taking the set 25–18. Despite solid defensive efforts from Sophia McGarvey and Ruby Patterson, the Lakers' improved hitting efficiency proved too much.
Hawkeye pushed back in the fourth, battling point for point with Iowa Lakes. Secora and Even delivered clutch kills, while Moorman and Scharper anchored the net. The RedTails made a late run, but Iowa Lakes held on to close the set 25–23 and take the match.
"We battled at Iowa Lakes," said Head Coach Christy Mahi. "We were without our starting setter, Kinzie Gardner, due to injury. Emmy Erwin came in and did a great job setting for us. We hit .667 as a team in set one. Sets two and three were a bit of a struggle, and then we battled in set four, trying to get to that fifth set but just couldn't quite get it done."
With the loss, the RedTails will look to regroup quickly as they prepare to host Western Iowa Tech on Wednesday night at home.
