The Hawkeye Community College RedTails men's soccer team turned in a dominant weekend performance, earning back-to-back victories over NJCAA opponents on the road.
On Friday, August 29, the RedTails secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over NJCAA Division I Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri. After a scoreless first half, freshman Toby Sentch found the back of the net in the 58th minute off an assist from Luke Hobson. Goalkeeper Dylan Lyle was outstanding in goal, recording eight saves to preserve the shutout.
Hawkeye carried its momentum into Saturday, August 30, earning a 2-1 victory over NJCAA Division II East Central College in Union, Missouri. Kaspar Szikszai opened the scoring in the 35th minute, assisted by Sentch. After East Central equalized in the 63rd minute, the RedTails answered quickly - just two minutes later - when George Mills netted the game-winner, with Hobson tallying his second assist of the weekend. Lyle and Roberto Romanelli combined for solid play in goal, sealing the second consecutive win.
Head Coach Jorge Sierra Galeas praised his team's grit and determination following the weekend sweep:
"The boys did an amazing job getting back to back wins against a NJCAA D1 side and a good NJCAA D2 side. We showed resilience and heart. This was the response we needed. Now we have to keep working hard and united to get another win next Saturday at home."
The RedTails improved to return to Waterloo for their home opener on Saturday, September 6, as they look to build on their strong start.
