RedTails Sweep the Scotties
The RedTail Softball Team finished their weekend traveling to Highland, Kansas to face Highland Community College in a double header. The RedTails swept the day, winning game one 8-4 and game two 9-0 in six innings.
Hawkeye (8), Highland (4)
The game started quietly for both teams the first two innings. Hawkeye opened up the scoring first in the top of the third. Jordan Eads started with a single and Keira Rathjen followed up with her own single. A sacrifice fly from Lucy Lebo scored Eads.
Highland responded with their own run in the bottom of the third, scoring on two doubles.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Scotties scored two more runs to go up 3-1.
Not to be outdone, the RedTails found their bats in the top of the fifth. Eads had another single and advanced to second on a Scottie error off the bat of Rathjen. A Lucy Lebo single loaded the bases. Delaney Eickert stepped in for a pinch hitting opportunity and drove a bases clearing single to put the RedTails up 4-3. Ellie Lorenz hit a sacrifice fly to put Tails up 5-3.
The Scotties put up their final run scoring off a homerun, giving them their fourth run of the game.
In the sixth inning, Hawkeye found a way to score more runs, when Emilee Bergmann walked and advanced to second off an Eads single. Rathjen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lebo singled to then score one run, and Isabelle Kriegel doubled to score two more, making the score 8-4 in favor of the RedTails.
A three up three down sixth inning for the defense of the RedTails and a clutch double play in the bottom of the seventh ended the game for the Scotties, giving the RedTails win one of the day.
At the plate, Eads led the way, going 3-3 with three runs scored. Kriegel also added three hits and two runs scored. Mya Chamberlin went the distance on the mound, throwing the full seven innings. She gave up six hits, three earned runs, one walk, and nine strikeouts.
Hawkeye (9), Highland (0): 6 Innings
The RedTails continued their hitting streak by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Kenzie Bridgewater hit a single and advanced to second when Kriegel walked. A home run from Lorenz gave them three runs. Emilee Bergmann hit a double off the fence and scored when Eickert hit a double herself.
In the second inning, Rathjen started with a single and moved to third on a Lebo double. Bridgewater hit a double to score one.
A three up three down inning on defense put the bats right back in the hands of Hawkeye. A Mya Chamberlin single and Eickert moved Chamberlin to third. Eads continued her hot streak and singled to score Chamberlin, giving the Tails a 6-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Bergmann singled and scored on an Eickert double.
The top of the sixth gave the RedTails enough to put them in run-rule territory. With a 7-0 lead, they kept attacking at the plate. Maranda Pollock started the inning with a walk and moved to second on a Kriegel single. Lorenz hit a single to load the bases, and a Bergmann single scored Pollock. Eickert hit a sacrifice fly to score the ninth run of the game.
A single, fly out, and double play ended the game, completing the six inning shut out.
At the plate, Eickert was 3-3 with three runs batted in. Bergmann was 3-4 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Lorenz, Bridgewater, Chamberlin, and Eads each had multi-hit games. On the mound, Eads went the six innings, finishing the shut out. She gave up just five hits and three strikeouts.
The RedTails move to 3-5 on the season. They are back in action on Friday, March 6th at State Fair Community College. Game time is set for 5 PM and 7 PM.
