The RedTail Softball Team had their home opener on Saturday, March 21st against Iowa Lakes Community College. The RedTails split on the day, losing game one 2-1 and winning game two 4-3 in eight innings.
Game One: 2 (ILCC), 1 (HCC)
Iowa Lakes scored first in the top of the third, scoring on a triple, walk, and sacrifice fly.
The game was quiet on the scoring end until the RedTails scored in the top of the sixth when Isabelle Kriegel hit a solo homerun to tie the game 1-1.
Iowa Lakes answered in the top of the seventh, scoring one run on a walk and double.
Hawkeye was unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh, ending the game in a 2-1 loss.
Kriegel led the way at the plate, going 1-3 with one run scored, one run batted in, and a homerun. Jordan Eads and Jordan Trueblood each added hits. Mya Chamberlin got the loss on the mound, going seven innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs, four walks, and eleven strikeouts.
Game Two: 4 (HCC), 3 (ILCC), eight innings
Iowa Lakes opened up the game scoring one run on a double, single, and double.
Trueblood hit her first of two homeruns in the game in the bottom of the second, tying the game up 1-1. Keira Rathjen then followed with a walk, moved to third on an Eads single, and scored on a passed ball, giving the RedTails a 2-1 lead.
Iowa Lakes took back the lead in the third, scoring two runs on a double, fielders choice, and three singles.
Down by one run, Chamberlin hit a solo homerun to tie the game 3-3 in the fourth inning.
The rest of regulation play was quiet at the plate, which forced extra innings. Lillian McCarty shut down the Laker offense three in a row to bring the Hawkeye bats up to the plate. With two outs, Trueblood hit her second home run of the day, ending the game in walk-off fashion.
Trueblood led at the plate, going 2-4 with two runs, two runs batted in, and two home runs. Chamberlin added a hit, run batted in, and run scored. On the mound, McCarty got the win, going five innings, giving up just one hit, two walks, and five strikeouts. Adelyn Sienknecht also threw, going three innings, giving up seven hits, three runs, three earned, one walk, and one strikeout.
The RedTails host two more home games on Sunday, March 22nd against Des Moines Area Community College at 1:00 & 3:00 PM.
