RedTails Lose to #22 NIACC
The Hawkeye RedTails traveled to Mason City to take on #22 North Iowa Area Community College. The RedTails lost two close games, losing game one 3-1 and losing game two 6-3.
Game One: 3 (NIACC), 1 (HCC)
The RedTails struck first in game one, scoring in the first inning. Mackenzie Bridgewater singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Isabelle Kriegel hit a single to score Bridgewater, giving the RedTails a 1-0 lead.
The game was quiet until the bottom of the fourth inning, when NIACC scored all three runs. A walk, a RedTail error, a single, and a triple helped clear the bases and give the Trojans a 3-1 lead.
Hawkeye threatened in the fifth with two runners on but could not score another run, and were unable to put any runs across the rest of the game, resulting in the 3-1 loss.
At the plate, Bridgewater led the way going 3-3 with one run scored. Kriegel added a hit and run batted in. On the mound, Mya Chamberlin took the loss, going six innings, giving up three runs, zero earned, one walk, and three strikeouts.
Game Two: 6 (NIACC), 3 (HCC)
Hawkeye struck first again in game one, scoring one run in the first inning. Bridgewater started with a single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a ball in play by Ellie Lorenz.
NIACC evened up the game in the first, scoring on a walk, stolen base, and single.
The game was a back-and-forth pitching battle until the fourth inning. Two doubles, a RedTail error, and sacrifice fly put the Trojans up 4-1.
NIACC scored two more runs in the fifth inning, scoring from two singles and a walk.
In the sixth, the RedTail bats came back to life. Lorenz walked and scored on a Chamberlin double. Keira Rathjen then hit a single to score Chamberlin to put the RedTails within three runs. Jordan Eads hit a single to keep the inning alive, but the RedTails got out of the inning with a fly ball that didn't have quite enough juice to leave the yard.
Unfortunately, that was the end of the scoring for the RedTails, as they were shutdown by the pitching of the Trojans the last inning, giving the RedTails a 6-3 loss.
Lorenz led the way at the plate, going 1-3 with a run scored, one run batted in, and a walk. Bridgewater added two hits. On the mound, McCarty went 4.1 innings, giving up six hits, six runs, four earned, two walks, and six strikeouts. Adelyn Sienknecht threw 1.2 innings, giving up just one hit and two strikeouts.
The RedTails are back in action on Wednesday, April 1st against Northeast Iowa Community College in Farley, Iowa. Game time is set for 2:00 & 4:00 PM.
