The RedTail Softball Team travelled to Cedar Rapids to take on number one ranked Kirkwood Community College. The RedTails played solid, but came up short at the end. They lost game one 2-0 and game two 7-2.
Game One: 2 (KCC), 0 (HCC)
The first game was a pitcher's duel from start to finish. The bats were not coming together for either team, with just five hits being sprayed across the two teams. The bottom of the third inning saw one of two Eagle runs. Kirkwood broke through the zeros and scored one run on two hits.
It became a back-and-forth defensive battle again until the sixth inning. One solo homerun for Kirkwood gave them an insurance run, giving them a 2-0 lead.
In the seventh inning with their backs against the wall, the RedTails got one runner on base when Mya Chamberlin hit a single to the wall, but was unable to score, giving Hawkeye a 2-0 loss to the number one team in the country.
Chamberlin and Jordan Eads had the two solo hits for the RedTails. Chamberlin took the loss, only giving up three hits, two earned runs, two walks, and four strikeouts.
Game Two: 7 (KCC), 5 (HCC)
The RedTails started out on top in game two, scoring two quick runs in the first inning. Mackenzie Bridgewater hit a single and scored on an Isabelle Kriegel homerun.
In the bottom of the second, the Eagles tied it up with a two-run homerun themselves.
The game remained 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth inning. Two walks and a single loaded the bases, and a single and homerun gave the Eagles a five-run lead.
The RedTails had two singles in the next two innings but were unable to capitalize with baserunners on, handing the RedTails their second loss of the day.
The RedTails had five hits in game two, with one solo homerun and two runs batted in from Kriegel. Lillian McCarty took the loss on the mound, going 4.1 innings, giving up five hits, seven earned runs, four walks, and five strikeouts. Adelyn Sienknecht threw 1.2 innings giving up no hits, no runs, and no walks.
The RedTails have two home dates set for this Sunday, April 19th and Monday, April 20th against North Iowa Area Community College and Iowa Central Community College. Sunday will be sophomore day to show appreciation for our 2026 graduating class.
