COUNCIL BLUFFS--- On Friday, August 27, the Hawkeye RedTails traveled to Council Bluffs to compete in the first cross country meet of the season at Iowa Western Community College.
They started both the men's and women’s 5k races at the same time. Due to lightning, the race had to be shortened and only 14 men had completed the course at that time.
D’Artagnon Beaver finished fourth with a time of 17:39.23. Stephen Cooper came in ninth place with a time of 18:25.50. Cooper Olson finished 10th with a time of 18:43.91. Coming in 14th with a time of 19:10.69 was Dodson Melchiori.
“Overall, the conditions were hot and humid and the course was a little soggy, with some tough hills so not producing overly fast times.” says Coach Tyler Mulder. “From the coaches standpoint it was just nice to see the athletes handle their first collegiate race and given the adjustments from the meet hosts moving the start time 10 minutes forward to avoid lightning. I thought the athletes handled all the conditions and adversity well with the weather, early start , and cancelation of the meet. Next up we’ll be at full strength for the Mount Mercy Cross country meet where both teams will run a 5k in their respective races! It will be nice to be closer to home for the athletes, fans and parents.”
